The Phases of the Moon for Kids - Primary Homework Help.

This is a homework project where students will observe, first hand, the moon phases, and report back to the class the next school day. This can be done whole class by taking turns, or individually where every student will go look for the moon each night and fill out their own book.

We can see the Moon because light from the Sun bounces off it back to the Earth. If the Sun wasn't there, we wouldn't be able to see the Moon. The Sun always lights up (illuminates) one side of the Moon. The Moon appears to change shape but what we are actually seeing is the Moon lit up by the light from the Sun in different ways on different days.

The phases are named after how much of the moon we can see, and whether the amount visible is increasing, or decreasing each day. Phases of the moon as seen in the Northern Hemisphere. Phases of the moon as seen in the Southern Hemisphere. It takes our Moon about 29.5 days to completely cycle through all eight phases. This is known as a Lunar.
